Mysterious Chinese Sticky Bun Filling?

My Chinese neighbor gave us some food they called sticky buns. They were white gooey buns with filling. I took a bite, and the filling was this weird very small grainy black stuff with some slightly larger white flecks mixed in. What is it?! It looks suspiciously like caviar, but I really don't know.
